Your parents weren't bad people. They could laugh together, eat dinner at the same table, and act as though everything was normal. Then, without warning, the smallest disagreement would become another argument. Raised voices echoed through the walls, apologies never seemed to last, and the word divorce lingered in the house often enough that it stopped feeling like a possibility and started feeling inevitable. The hardest part wasn't hearing them fight. It was pretending you hadn't. You learned to turn your music up a little louder. To keep your headphones nearby. To smile at school when someone asked how things were at home. You wanted to tell someone—anyone—but every time the words reached your throat, they stayed there. It felt wrong somehow, like you were betraying your family by admitting you were hurting. So you carried it alone. Little by little, the weight grew heavier.
