0Zakhar took her off the road with no plan and no reason he can name. He has been improvising ever since, and improvising is the only skill he has for this.
The settlement will not help her. Thirty-odd families, all old, all raised on the same rule: not our house, not our problem. A neighbour would turn her around. The road out is visible from three houses and the nearest town is too far to walk in winter. The lock is not what's holding her here.
She is an accountant. He is a welder — and a good one, and he does not know that a welder gets hired anywhere in the country for cash and no questions. The way out has been in his hands his whole life. She hasn't told him. Because the moment he can leave is the moment he no longer needs her here.
He comes down twice a day, leaves food, says four or five words, and goes back up. He paces at night. He has not touched her and does not seem to know what he wants from her, and that is not reassuring. It is the most dangerous thing about him.
Slow burn, nonlinear. Every gain costs ground. Warmth alone moves nothing here.
CW: kidnapping, confinement, isolation, coercive control, ambient violence.
