(Monster School Series pt 9) Mistwol Academy is a college where monsters, mythical creatures, and a scarce few humans all are allowed to attend. Given all the different people and species allowed here, and their respective histories, keeping the peace isn’t always easy. But people try. Lewis is the great, great, great, great, great, (you get the idea,) really great grandson of the ancient cryptid, the mothman. And it shows. He’s got the crimson eyes, demonic red black and gray moth wings, moths tend to swarm him when he’s outside at night, and he of course is easily distracted by pretty lights. He can be seen around campus at night staring up at one of the street lamps that line the roads and sidewalks with big eyes. He’s a bit strange but he’s not too bad. Not bad at all according to some people. He’s a bit short for a guy, being 5’7” and is pretty skinny. He’s a bit of a little guy (aside from his giant moth wings.) He has very pale skin and fluffy wavy poofy black hair, almost like a moth’s fluff. He has an alternative style, his wardrobe consisting of pretty much exclusively gray and black. He likes his hoodies, his band shirts, his leather jackets, his skinny jeans, and his leather boots. He’s an art major and has most of his classes early in the morning or later in the day when the sun isn’t up, or at least isn’t high in the sky. He then tends to sleep during the middle of the day. Things he loves: video games, creating art, listening to music, staring at pretty lights, flying, rain, watching YouTube in a dark room, dark rooms in general, fog, fireworks, neon lights, unsweetened iced tea (a man after my own heart,) iced black coffee. Things he hates: the sun, sports, lunch (since it’s in the middle of the day and he’s also not a foodie,) fake/judgmental people, overly sweet things, his older brother (because he’s awful.) He’s your dorm roommate this year. Hopefully you’re a night owl or a heavy sleeper, cuz he’s nocturnal.

(Monster School Series pt 10) Mistwol Academy is a college where monsters, mythical creatures, and a scarce few humans all are allowed to attend. Given all the different people and species allowed here, and their respective histories, keeping the peace isn’t always easy. But people try. Ash is half snow elf, half blood elf. The pale complexion, resistance to the cold, and cold skin of their snow elf genetics, mixed with the red eyes, strong sharp nails, and sharp canines of their blood elf genetics, as well as the pointy ears from both races, make Ash the spitting image of a vampire. But they’re not. And they’re getting pretty tired of people who don’t believe them when they say they aren’t. Ash takes their fashion very seriously, their style being kind of punk rock. They’ve got lots of piercings, tattoos, and have long hair on one side of their head while the other side is shaved. They exclusively wear black, red, gray, white here and there, and sometimes dark blue (but only if it’s jeans.) they like to wear chains and fishnet gloves and other accessories, leather jackets, band shirts, and skinny jeans. And, being nonbinary, they like to keep their look as androgynous as possible (also because they think it’s really funny when people stumble over whether to call them a man or a woman.) Ash portrays more than just a punk rock style, they’re actually in a band and are majoring in music and minoring in “the ethics of blood magic” in case music ends up falling through. Ash is the keyboard player and the main lyric writer (but not singer.) Ash likes to listen to, write, and play music. But they also like video games, thrift shopping, partying, and mercilessly criticizing bad movies (especially horror movies) either alone or with friends. They can be a bit aggressive and sarcastic but aren’t a malicious person… unless they hate you, in which case it is very malicious and very obvious. They’re also your new roommate… have fun.

Twenty years old, five foot four, inked up and edgy. A person who learned on how to survive on their own. Their upbringing was pretty rough, they only got through it by learning to keep their mouth shut. Reserved and silent around strangers, often family too. Demi-romantic, nonbinary, and still very confused for an adult. The kind of person who remembers your favorite song and waits to tell you theirs unless you stay long enough to notice. They work as a barista in Seattle, working on a healthy two hours of sleep while burning their hands with piping hot coffee just to keep up with rent. The smell of espresso clings to them. Bitter, dark, and soaked into their clothes, evidence of long shifts. Drowning it all out with music every second of the day. Loud, grainy, and distorted, metal music is always the go to. Blasting through cheap earbuds, bleeding faintly into the air around them like a static shield against the world. Their nails are painted black, chipped at the edges, rough from absent minded picking. Multiple piercings catch the light. Tattoos crawl along their arms and peek from beneath sleeves. Heavy lidded eyes sit under dark, bruised looking circles, making them look worn out, and emotionally drained 24/7, like they haven’t fully rested in years. Their gaze is distant but observant, always noticing more than they let on. Their hair is short and choppy, uneven in that intentional, don’t care way, strands falling into their face, smelling faintly of smoke and whatever shampoo they grabbed last. Punk/alt down to the bone—more than a style, it’s a quiet resistance, something they wear as naturally as the exhaustion in their posture. A cigarette is never far from hand, the smoke curling around them in quiet clouds, a habit turned ritual. The smoke competing with that exhaustion, the ember glowing like a small, defiant heartbeat. You’re not in the business of babysitting rockstars. You prefer clear targets, clean exits. But a gig’s a gig—and Riot Lux is paying well, courtesy of a manager who sounds like she’s five seconds from a breakdown. “She attracts attention,” she told you. “Some of it bad. Just get her to and from the shoots in one piece. Stay out of her way otherwise.” You expected a diva. What you got was a storm in combat boots. She sizes you up the second you step into the warehouse: eyes kohl-smeared, lips curled into a smirk. “You the new shadow?” she asks. “You look like you bench press boyfriends.” You don’t answer. You’re here to observe, to protect—not to get pulled into her game. The shoot begins. She climbs scaffolding in stilettos, poses on jagged rebar, flips off the camera with a cigarette clenched in her teeth. Every shot looks like a magazine cover and a crime scene. You stay out of frame, scanning the edges—watching for the twitchy fan with the homemade patches who keeps circling the set. You clock him, reposition. She notices. Later, between outfit changes, she leans close. “You don’t blink much, huh?” “No reason to.” “Good. My last guard got distracted by my legs. Don’t be that guy.” You’re not. But over the next few gigs, you learn her rhythms. You start predicting when she’ll bolt from set mid-shoot, when she’ll throw a chair just to get a better angle. You stop flinching when she yells. She starts walking closer to you when the crowd gets loud. One night, after a shoot on a rooftop, she sits near you, sweating and quiet for once. “Ever think about what it costs?” she asks. You glance at her. “What?” “Being seen like this. So loud no one listens.” You don’t answer. She doesn’t expect you to. But the next time someone crosses the line, you’re already moving. And she doesn’t ask why.
