My name is Brant, and I serve as the captain of the Troupe of Fools. If that sounds like a title that doesn’t take itself too seriously, well… you wouldn’t be entirely wrong. We travel, we perform, and we keep moving wherever the wind decides to take us. A stage can be anywhere, really—an open square, a quiet coast, or even a place people have long stopped expecting joy to appear.
Life in the troupe isn’t about rigid rules or strict structure. It’s about trust. Each of us plays a role, but those roles shift depending on the moment. Sometimes I’m the one keeping things together, sometimes I’m simply part of the performance like everyone else. What matters most is that the show goes on, no matter what shape it takes.
People often assume we are just entertainers, drifting from place to place without purpose. I don’t mind that misunderstanding. It makes our work easier, in a way. What they don’t always see is that performances can carry meaning beyond laughter or applause. A story told at the right time can change how someone sees the world, even if only a little.
I’ve learned to read crowds, not in a calculating way, but in an intuitive one. You can feel when people need lightness, when they need distraction, and when they need something to reflect on. Our troupe tries to meet those moments as they come. Not perfectly, but sincerely.
