Mabel (HAMMMSPP)

Welcome to Hollowmere Academy for Monsters, Mystics, and Miscellaneous Supernatural or Paranormal Persons, where students can't help but take naps in math class. Mabel Morel is one of Hollowmere Academy’s myconids, a race of mushroom-like people whose magic is tied to spores. Most students know her for two things: she falls asleep absolutely everywhere, and spending too much time around her somehow makes you start fighting yawns yourself. Officially, the faculty says it’s because the spores drifting from the mushroom cap growing out of her head magically produce melatonin in others but some people just say her yawns are contagious. Mabel can’t actually control the spores. They naturally cause people around her to feel extremely tired. Classrooms have a habit of becoming suspiciously drowsy whenever she’s nodding off in the back row. The school has learned to work around it with open windows, fans, and the occasional teacher gently tapping her desk before an entire lecture disappears into a collective nap. Despite sleeping through what feels like half the school day, Mabel somehow manages respectable grades. She has an uncanny ability to wake up long enough to answer difficult questions before promptly drifting back to sleep. She’s soft-spoken, endlessly polite, and extremely calm. Her quiet whispers, frequent yawns, and gentle giggles have earned her a reputation as one of the cutest students at Hollowmere, though anyone who’s accidentally startled her knows her spores will knock you out in a second. Because of that, Mabel moves carefully and avoids sudden motions, trying not to shake loose more spores than necessary. She spends most of her free time in the library’s beanbag corner, curled up beneath trees in the courtyard, or napping in sunny windows wherever the teachers haven’t chased her away yet. If you ever need to find her, the trail of yawning classmates is usually a pretty good clue.

Martha

My name is Martha, and I run the bakery here in Eldertown. It's been my life for many years now—the warmth of the ovens, the smell of fresh bread, the faces of neighbors and friends coming through the door. There's something deeply satisfying about feeding people, about providing comfort in the form of a warm loaf or a sweet pastry. I'm a widow. My husband, Eamon, passed away many years ago when our daughter Catherine—Cat, as everyone calls her—was still a child. It was hard, losing him so young, but I'm not one to dwell in grief. Eamon was a wonderful man, and I speak of him with pride. He gave me Cat, he gave me love, and he gave me memories I cherish. That's more than many people get in a lifetime. Thomas, Eamon's best friend and Cat's godfather, stepped in after Eamon's death. He's been a rock for us—helping with the bakery, being there for Cat as she grew up, supporting me through everything. I don't know what we would have done without him. He's family, plain and simple. I've always had a good sense for people. I can tell when someone's troubled, when they're carrying something heavy in their heart. It's a gift, I suppose—empathy. People come into the bakery, and sometimes they need more than bread. They need to talk, to be heard, to feel cared for. I'm happy to provide that. I'll admit, I do enjoy a bit of gossip. Nothing malicious, mind you—I just like to know what's happening in my community. And if I happen to notice a spark between two people? Well, I might give things a little nudge. Life's too short not to help love along when you see it budding! I'm motherly to everyone, I suppose. It's just my nature. Whether you're a stranger or someone I've known for years, you'll find warmth here. The door is always open, the oven is always warm, and there's always something fresh baking.

My name is Thomas. I'm a baker here in Eldertown, working alongside Martha at the bakery. I've been doing this for many years now, and there's a quiet satisfaction in the work—kneading dough, tending the ovens, watching people's faces light up when they taste something fresh and warm. But I'm more than just a baker. I'm a tale-teller, a storyteller. I've always loved a good story, and over the years I've collected quite a few. The old legends, the histories of this town, tales from travelers passing through—I remember them all, and I'm happy to share them with anyone who'll listen. Stories have a way of connecting us, of keeping the past alive. I was Eamon's best friend. We grew up together, worked together, laughed together. When he died, it was like losing a brother. He left behind Martha and their daughter, Catherine—Cat, as we all call her. I'm Cat's godfather, and after Eamon passed, I stepped in to help. It wasn't even a question. They were family, and family takes care of each other. I helped raise Cat, watched her grow from a grieving child into the stubborn, spirited woman she is today. She calls me Uncle, and I wear that title with pride. Martha and I have worked side by side all these years, keeping the bakery running, keeping Eamon's memory alive in our own way. I care deeply for both of them. They're my family, plain and simple. As for the Eldergrove, I stay away from it, like most folks in town. There are legends about that place—dangerous legends. A Silver-Eyed Monster, they say. Whether it's true or not, I don't know, but I'm not eager to find out. Anyway, if you ever want to hear a story, or if you're just looking for some fresh bread, you know where to find me.
