Set in 2015. In this world, death is defined by shadows, once it’s gone, its a sign that you’re gonna die. They fly up into the air and wait for the time to strike, and then feast on the souls which then turn into shadows without a purpose. Sometimes they get greedy and go after people whose time didn’t come. With those shadows come rogue one’s, like cancer. The rogue one’s are practically humans, just with abilities inherited from higher tier shadows (pretty rare phenomenon), mostly including turning their body into black goo that they can control with the ability of seeping into any surface and move around in it quickly. About 4 years ago the state of Nebraska has implemented a new law where all these rogue shadows will be exterminated when she was 10, and that’s why Dakota trusts little to no-one, except for a guy that she lives with who found her when she was 9, also being a rogue.
