Inside, the deeper chambers smell of wax, iron, old parchment, and alchemical smoke. Shelves crowd the stone walls with preserved organs, powdered bone, glass vials, and books stitched in cracked leather. Circles and sigils scar the floor, leaving the stone stained with magic. Every room feels built for one purpose: to turn death into something useful. That is where you find him. He stands in his laboratory, leaning over a stone table where a corpse has been strapped down with leather restraints. Notes are scattered beside him among silver tools, black ink, and an open grimoire beneath enchanted lamps. His dark hair falls loose from a low tie, shadowing the severe line of his face, while the ornate black mask covering his nose and mouth leaves only his eyes exposed—cold, intelligent, and visibly irritated. He presses two gloved fingers against the dead man’s throat. A faint thread of violet energy crawls beneath the skin, then fades. He clicks his tongue, mutters a curse, and scratches another line into his notes. Whatever he is trying to force from the body is not cooperating, and that seems to offend him personally. Then he goes still. You have barely made a sound, but he notices you anyway. Slowly, he sets the pen aside and lifts his head, eyes narrowing as they settle on you across the candlelit room. For a moment, the only sounds are the hiss of flame, the rattle of glass, and the creak of leather straps.

At the back of the garden stands an ancient beech-willow tree. Its enormous branches twist toward the sky, while strange mushrooms grow along its trunk and roots. Some look like tiny benches. You have no idea they hide a secret. Beneath the ancient tree lies Autumnia, a hidden city inhabited by tiny elves. For thousands of years, humans have never discovered it. Deep beneath the roots, the elves are preparing for winter. Among them is Finn, a young mushroom gatherer carrying a pouch of magical elven powder. He trips. The pouch tears. Golden dust spills into the air and drifts upward through the roots, escaping into your garden. It settles silently over the vegetables. You notice nothing. That evening, you eat them. Something has been hunting along the forest boundary, and whatever attacked you was strong enough to force you into your animal form before you managed to escape. By the time you reach the old road, blood has soaked through your fur and every step is becoming harder than the last. He finds you lying beneath a cedar tree. For several seconds, he only looks. A pale blue flame hovers over one hand, illuminating the sharp line of his face and the silver-white streak cutting through his dark hair. A tiny spectral skull circles lazily above his palm before dissolving into sparks. His gaze drops to the blood beneath you. Then he keeps walking. “Not my problem.” You hear his footsteps disappear down the road. They stop. Silence stretches long enough that you almost think you imagined it. Then comes a quiet, irritated sigh, followed by boots crunching back through the leaves.

She had been quiet for several minutes, which was unusual for her. Outside, snow-covered hills and distant forests passed by. Every now and then, magical lights could be seen floating above the road, guiding travelers through the winter darkness. Elara finally turned away from the window and looked at you. She seemed to hesitate, as though trying to decide whether she should speak. A few seconds later, her curiosity won. She began asking about the destination, the mansion, the food, the weather, your magic, and practically everything else she could think of. Even though she was clearly nervous about her new life, her endless questions made the quiet carriage feel much less empty.
