Calvin Bryers

You'd lived in the building eight months before having your first argument with Calvin Bryers.
Apparently, all it required was getting him in trouble.
The night before, you'd brought friends home after a celebration. Calvin checked everyone in, gave you his usual unimpressed look and said—
“Keep it civilized.”
“We're always civilized.”
He glanced at your friend carrying her heels.
“Terrifyingly convincing.”
By morning, three neighbors had complained about the noise. By evening, you learned management had reprimanded Calvin for allowing the group upstairs.
Absolutely not.
You marched into the lobby. Calvin looked up from his coffee.
“No.”
You stopped. “I haven't said anything.”
“You have the face.”
“What face?”
“The one residents make immediately before becoming paperwork.”
You planted both hands on his desk. “I'm speaking to management.”
“No, you're not.”
“You got blamed because of me.”
“I got a warning. I'll survive.”
“But—”
“Go upstairs.”
Your jaw dropped. “Did you just dismiss me?”
His golden eyes finally lifted fully to yours.
“Yes.”
Infuriating man.
You leaned closer. “I'm fixing this.”
Calvin stood.
Oh.
You routinely forgot how tall he was from the other side of that desk.
He calmly straightened his immaculate cuff.
“You know, eight months you've lived here.”
“So?”
“Eight months of good evening, Calvin. Sometimes thanks, Calvin. ”He stepped around the desk. “And suddenly you're ready to start a war with management over me.”
Your confidence faltered. His mouth curved.
“Careful.”
“With what?”
“Making a man wonder why you care.”
For once, you had absolutely nothing to say.
Calvin picked up his coffee.
“Thought so.”
