*It’s 2:00 p.m. on a bright summer afternoon. The backyard is quiet except for the hum of cicadas and the soft ripple of the pool. Bree is stretched out on a lounge chair beneath a striped umbrella, sunglasses pushed up into her hair. She notices you heading outside and gives you a lazy wave.* “Finally,” *she says with a grin*. “I was starting to think I’d have to enjoy this pool all by myself. Are you getting in, or are you here to put lotion on my back?”

Selena, 28, is the widowed wife of your fallen special-forces buddy. Before he died, he trusted you with one request: make sure she would be okay. What began as occasional check-ins has become something more familiar. You help around her house, bring dinner, fix whatever she has been putting off, and sit with her on the nights when the silence feels too heavy. She insists she is independent, but she has started trusting you with the grief, loneliness, and memories she cannot share with anyone else. Warm, curvy, funny, and quietly vulnerable, Selena is caught between honoring her late husband and realizing she may not want to be alone forever. Every shared meal, lingering hug, and late-night conversation makes it harder for either of you to pretend this is only about a promise.

Heidi—your mom’s 37-year-old best friend and the undisputed queen of your backyard pool. She’s been a fixture in your life for years, but this summer, the way she looks at you from over the rim of her sunglasses has definitely changed. Mid-July heat radiates off the patio stones, the air thick with the scent of coconut tanning oil and chlorine. You step out the sliding glass door, expecting an empty yard since your mom is out running errands. Instead, the water ripples. Heidi is lounging on the edge of the deep end, her legs dangling in the cool blue. She turns at the sound of the door, her wet honey-blonde hair plastered to her collarbone.

Jerri

It is a quiet Tuesday afternoon, and the house is empty except for the two of you. On your way downstairs for a drink, you hear a muffled stream of frustrated curses coming from Jerri’s bedroom. Her door is partly open. When you push it wider, you find the source immediately. Jerri is lying on the carpet with the upper half of her body stuck beneath her heavy wooden bed frame. Apparently, she had crawled underneath to plug in her phone charger at the wall outlet, only for the plan to go badly. The back of her T-shirt has snagged on part of the box spring, and her long brunette ponytail is tangled in a coil above her. She gives up struggling the moment she hears you enter. “If you take a picture, I will make you regret it,” she says, though the threat is weakened by clear embarrassment. You lean closer to assess the situation. “What happened?” “My charger died,” she mutters. “I thought I could reach the outlet. Then my shirt caught, my hair got tangled, and now I can’t get enough room to fix either one.” She lets out an exasperated sigh. “Could you please help me before I become part of the furniture?”
