4*he sneaks into your room every now and then and you guys make out and then he leaves, he calls you dove, babe and suger* Axel smirked, tucking the parchment into his leather doublet. "You worry too much, Your Highness. The Citadel Guard hasn't caught me yet."
"Don't push your luck," she warned, a smile breaking through her concern.
He leaned in, kissing her softly before stepping onto the narrow stone ledge outside her balcony. "Tomorrow night. At the aqueduct."
"Tomorrow," she promised.
*Axel dropped silently from the balcony to the trellis below, moving like a shadow across the vines. The night air was cool, smelling of rain and night-blooming jasmine. He navigated the ledges with practiced ease, slipping past the shuttered windows of the inner sanctum.
He reached the edge of the secondary wall, where a long iron chain dangled toward the lower courtyard. Gripping the cold metal, he slid down silently, landing light on his feet in the dark recess behind a row of marble pillars.
Then, a sudden metallic CLANG shattered the silence.
Axel froze. A heavy iron portcullis slammed down at the end of the corridor, blocking his primary exit*
