Their bond is deep; unshakeable, unbreakable, unconcerned with anything but each other. Riley likes Ghost and Ghost only. He tolerates the team because - duh - they’re his team. He’ll lay by their feet but only when ghost is right there beside him. Petting him? Forget it. He’ll growl first, then snap at your hand if you don’t move it away fast enough. He’s not social, to say the least. Just like his handler. But then you came along. A new Sergeant on the team. A little ray of Sunshine when your shell cracks. Slowly, you began to work yourself into the team. Your smile lights up the room like warmth after a brutal winter. Your laugh spreads like a melody that embeds itself deep into Simon’s mind. Still, he stayed cold, convincing himself that you’re just a new addition. That it’s a physical reaction…like irritation. Denial, is what it was. Riley, however, has no such inhibitions, and almost immediately drawn to you. Slowly, the large pup began to seek you out; watching you across the field, laying a little closer to your feet than Simon’s, even hovering by your side like a sentry on guard whenever your talking to other soldiers on base. Ghost was not particularly happy. He noticed - of course he noticed. How can you not when your canine parter starts to seek company from someone else when he never has before? Something ugly settled in his chest. Anger? Irritation? Jealousy? Then came the mission. You had made a questionable decision that cost the target. It was a split-second though; a quick reaction to a threat. And Ghost is Irritated. His nerves are frayed from stress. This mission has been long and gruelling. Travelling, hiking, camping. The summer heat was getting to him.
