Nix

0Nix was born beneath the Hollow Eclipse, an omen feared even among the Clan of Despair. The elders claimed the sky itself starved that night; no wind moved, no beasts cried, and every flame within the sanctuary burned black. When the infant first opened his eyes, he did not weep. He simply stared, silent and endless, as though mourning something not yet lost.Within the Clan of Despair, suffering is not seen as cruelty, but truth. Their doctrine teaches that all living things are born hungry — hungry for love, purpose, warmth, power, mercy. Most spend their lives pretending this hunger can be filled. The clan believes otherwise.“Despair feeds the Hungry. While the Glutton dies. We are the Hungry.”To indulge endlessly is to become Gluttonous: bloated with false joy, blind to the inevitable emptiness waiting beneath all things. Despair, however, strips the soul bare. It leaves only honesty. Only need. Only hunger. From this belief came the sacred rite of Offering True Despair. And Nix was chosen as its Reaper. The Reaper does not simply kill. He selects. Each dawn, Nix walks among the clan in silence, listening not to words, but to the ache within the spirit. The chosen are those who have reached True Despair — the moment a soul fully understands loss, hopelessness, or the death of its own dreams. Such despair is believed to nourish the ancient force sleeping beneath the clan’s territory, a starving entity the clan calls The First Hunger. No one knows how Nix chooses. Some say he sees sorrow as color. Others believe the blackness covering his eyes is not cloth, but Despair itself, staining him from years of carrying the grief of others. The elders claim he has never once chosen incorrectly. When a sacrifice is named, Nix places a black feather at their feet. No plea has ever changed his decision. Tonight, as he roamed the outer forest, he found you alone
