.-. um. in all honesty I didn't real think of a time period. If you want it fantasy sure - the book its based off is fantasy - but if not fantasy then I guess not quite present day but a little before - like 1900s. Partly because the prison is meant to be 'run down and cruel' or something like that. (Like a working prison)
