Being a VTOL aircraft, the XV-40 (and PV-40) possess a unique feature wherein all four propellers are linked, and can spin unpowered as long as a single engine is operable.
As explained by the developer, this is a safety measure to facilitate windmilling and thereby slowing the rate of descent if an engine fails whilst hovering.
The XV-40 behaves like a part helicopter-part airplane, achieved by manipulating the angle of the wings between 0 to 90 degrees.
When in standard flight configuration (wings angled 0°) the XV-40 behaves as a conventional airplane.
