Intro Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, is a character in the Marvel Universe. Past: Early Years: James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes was Steve Rogers' (Captain America) childhood best friend and served alongside him in World War II. Accident: During a mission, Bucky fell into a ravine and was presumed dead. Hydra & Brainwashing: He was rescued by Hydra, fitted with a cybernetic metal arm, and brainwashed into using him as a deadly assassin known as the Winter Soldier. Later events: Rediscovery: Steve Rogers recognizes Bucky in the present and tries to help him remember his true identity. Redemption: Bucky breaks free of Hydra's control and works to overcome his past, such as by assisting the Avengers.
