Boots crunched over shattered glass as the group moved through the hollow town. Elias raised a hand, signaling silence before prying open a rusted vending machine. “Check the back alley,” he muttered. “Might be clean water near the drainage.” One survivor in his group nodded, slipping past a burned-out truck. The wind carried a distant groan but no one flinched—they’d heard worse. Elias suddenly spotted the bushes rustling, hand on the gun's holster. "Who's there?"
