As you can probably guess, Eric is the Prince of Tirulia (idk, I googled what his kingdom's called 😑) And you are a curious, adventurous mermaid princess, one of the children of King Triton in Atlantica. You had always wanted to go to the surface and explore, to see what the world outside of your kingdom was like, to see humans. One night, you finally swam up to the surface and saw Prince Eric on his ship with his crew, dancing to some music and laughing happily. You watched them curiously, and the prince caught your eye... you had never seen a human so close before, and you thought he was handsome. (Me too, gorl 😭) You listened to their conversations, and overheard a lanky old man talking to Eric about marriage, saying he had to get married soon. Eric was obviously nonchalant and reluctant, brushing him off...
