Months later, Sally finds a small, anonymous parcel on her step. Inside is a postcard of a place she has never been: a seaside cliff with a lighthouse. On the back, in the same careful hand, are three words.

Chapter 12 — Departure

The TARDIS hums. The Doctor stands in the doorway, coat flapping like a flag. Martha is impatient for the next adventure. Sally is tired and oddly content.

“You could come with us,” the Doctor says, half as a joke and half as an offer.

Chapter 11 — Afterimages

In the aftermath, the theatre is a ruin of memories and dust. The Angels are statues again, but their hunger has been broken. The Doctor says the collapse will hold for a long time, but nothing is permanent. He says monsters adapt. He says the city will always have places that remember.

Sally sits on the stage and looks at the Polaroid in her hand. The note on the back is smudged but still legible: Don’t blink. She thinks of the man in the photograph and the way his smile had not been stone. She thinks of the Doctor and Martha and the way they had come into her life like a storm.

Chapter 10 — Vigil

The plan is desperate and precise. The Doctor will trigger a localized temporal collapse that will sever the Angels’ bridge. To do it, he needs a human anchor — someone whose memory will be left intact as a counterweight. That person must watch the collapse and hold the line.

Sally volunteers again. She will be the anchor. She will keep her eyes open and remember everything she can, so that the memory cannot be taken. Martha protests, but Sally is resolute. She has been given a choice and she will make it.

Chapter 9 — The Choice

The Doctor traces the pattern. The Angels have been building a bridge out of memory, a ladder that will let them step into lives and take them whole. If they succeed, entire people could be erased, their histories folded into stone.

There is a way to stop them: a temporal reset that would collapse the Angels’ bridge and erase the memory they have taken. But the reset would also erase the memory of those who had survived

Chapter 8 — Echoes

The trap works in a way none of them expected. The Angels, forced to see themselves, hesitate. In that hesitation, the Doctor’s device sends a pulse that fractures their quantum lock. For a moment — a breath — they are statues and nothing more.

But the pulse does something else. It releases a shimmer of memory into the room, like dust motes in a shaft of light. The memories are not just images; they are sensations, names, the smell of a mother’s hair, the sound of a laugh. They hang in the air like a film.

Chapter 7 — The Longest Minute

They set a trap that is as much about endurance as it is about technology. The Doctor rigs the theatre with mirrors and cameras and a sound loop that will force the Angels to look at themselves. The idea is to make the Angels see their own reflection

Sally volunteers to be the human watch. She will sit in the projection booth and keep the cameras rolling. Martha will run interference on the ground. The Doctor will operate the device that will force the Angels to look.

Chapter 6 — Counting the Cost

Back in the TARDIS, the Doctor paces. Martha tends to a bruise on her arm and refuses to be fussed over. Sally sits with the Polaroid and the camera and the sense that the city is a living thing that has been rearranged.

“They’re harvesting memory,” the Doctor says at last. “They’re using it to build bridges. They take a life’s shape and they use it to step across time.”

Chapter 5 — The Theatre of Waiting

They find the projection booth. It is a small room with a window that looks down on the stage. The projector is ancient, its reels like the ribs of a sleeping animal. The Angels have arranged themselves around it, like an audience waiting for a film that never ends.

The Doctor sets up a device that hums with a frequency meant to disturb quantum-locking. It is clever and dangerous and the kind of thing that makes Martha mutter about “one of your mad ideas.” The plan is to force the Angels to move, to break their lock long enough to trap them in a place where they cannot feed.
