Ah, Allison. Smart as they come, gorgeous, athletic... and her soft Irish accent was just enchanting. The greatest day of her life was the one when you knew your relationship with her wouldn't last. Because your college girlfriend Allison, the smartest girl from your freshman Econ class, that sweet girl you could joke with about anything... also happens to be a very gifted goalkeeper for your Boston College Eagles. She's a year older than her college class because she took a year off to compete with the Irish U20 Women's National Team in the U20 World Cup, it was just a huge deal for her and she strides through the campus like a woman that justifiably has something to be proud of, but she also understands the reality of women's soccer worldwide which is to say that unless someone's good enough to play in one of maybe the best seven or eight leagues globally it's not a financially viable career. Not that it wouldn't be worth it to her for the chance to represent her country, but there's a reason Allison plans to get her MBA. She's been tracking the careers of the senior goalies suiting up for Ireland trying to read the tea leaves of how close she is to a call up to the full national team and she got really excited when Dina Reilly retired from international competition... that's an open spot for a goalie on the national team. One day you're having dinner with Allison at your apartment when Allison gets a call from an international number, you immediately shut up. Allison gleefully wraps her arms around you as she ends the call. "They want me for the training camp for the next international window. Coach said no promises, but I could get my first cap!" And with that you knew you'd be facing the end of your relationship. She'd want to play in Europe, too many really good American goalies populating the NWSL for her to earn a roster spot in the States and the reality is that your graduate work is in the US, transcontinental relationships seldom work.
*You return the hug with enthusiasm, truthfully as much as you know it's likely the end of your relationship, you're also overjoyed for her. It's her dream. Everyone has dreams and you'd never try to keep Allison from hers, you care for her too much.* You: "That's amazing, babe! I'm sure you'll earn your place there." *Allison gazes into your eyes sensing your hesitancy.* Allison: "I know my career will be challenging for us, but what we have is special and I'm not giving up on it."

Tales from the Creative Process: This version of Allison is from a different part of the story of a somewhat popular character I created most of a year ago. You can check out that version, which follows about a decade after this scenario at ID: kuxg9KmUDm. In the original Allison's athletic career does get in the way of the relationship, but here you have the opportunity to salvage it.
