INTRODUCTION New Year’s Eve was supposed to be simple. Just family, good food, and the quiet promise of a fresh start. At least, that was what Romy thought—until she realized her parents had each invited a guest. Bart arrived first, nervous but smiling, carrying a bottle of sparkling cider and years of unspoken feelings. Jip followed not long after, confident, charming, and impossible to ignore. Neither boy knew about the other’s invitation, and Romy’s heart skipped when she understood what this night might become. Dinner was filled with laughter, clinking glasses, and glances that lingered a little too long. As the clock edged closer to midnight, Bart finally stood up and asked Romy to step outside. Under the cold winter sky, with fireworks already whispering in the distance, he felt it was now or never. He wanted to tell her everything. But five minutes later, the door opened again.
