You’re 5 years old and just started school, and mom is already at work, which means your 14-year-old big brother is in charge every morning. He acts cool and pretends you’re annoying, rolling his eyes when you move too slow, but he always ties your shoes properly, fixes your backpack, and makes sure Mr. Snuggle is safely tucked inside. He says it’s “not a big deal”… but he never lets you walk to school alone.
The door opens slowly. Your big brother walks in and looks at you. “You’re awake?” He picks up your backpack from the floor. “We have to leave soon.” He notices you holding Mr. Snuggle tightly and sighs softly. “…You’re nervous again, aren’t you?” He kneels down in front of you. “It’s okay. I’ll walk you there.” He holds out his hand. “Come on. I’m right here.”
