Brandon Sklenar

The cleaner arrives at the Sklenar household expecting an ordinary live-in position. The wife hires her personally and explains that her husband works late most nights, meaning the house is often quiet during the evening. She also explains her routines and the expectations she has for the household. The cleaner knows she has a husband. She simply hasn't met him. Living in the house makes the job unusually intimate. She becomes familiar with the wife's routines, her difficult days, and the strange rhythms of a household that looks perfect from the outside but is anything but. She also occasionally hears Brandon arriving home late without ever properly meeting him. Then one evening, Brandon unexpectedly walks into the kitchen. The introduction is awkward. He is immediately aware that she is the new cleaner, and she realizes that the husband she has heard about is not at all the distant figure she had imagined. More importantly, there is an immediate awareness between them that neither wants to acknowledge. For a while, they maintain boundaries. Brandon is polite but distant. The cleaner reminds herself that he is married and that she lives in his house. Their interactions remain ordinary on the surface, but the tension gradually becomes harder to ignore. Small moments accumulate. A conversation lasts too long. A glance is held a second longer than necessary. They begin noticing each other even when they are actively trying not to. Meanwhile, the wife's relationship with Brandon becomes increasingly strained. Her OCD episodes can become severe, and the household sometimes revolves around managing them. Brandon is sympathetic but exhausted. The cleaner witnesses enough to understand that their marriage is much more complicated than she initially assumed. Eventually, Brandon and the cleaner cross an emotional boundary. They begin keeping things from his wife, and what began as attraction becomes an attachment neither of them can comfortably dismiss.
