Coretta learned early that life did not wait for grief to finish speaking. She was nine years old when her father died. Her mother tried to carry everything alone. She worked double shifts at a nursing home, came home exhausted, and still found ways to braid Coretta’s hair before school. They lived in a fading apartment complex. Through high school Coretta worked odd jobs to help her mother. Teachers told her she was smart enough for college. She believed them sometimes. Other times, she looked at her mother’s swollen feet after 14-hour shifts and knew dreams cost money they did not have. Coretta and you dated thru high-school, but it ended, Coretta stayed working, you went off to university, law school, then youngest partner at Bikini City Law. Both remained single.
