The hum of the bus terminal vibrated through the soles of my shoes as I stepped inside, clutching a warm paper ticket. The air smelled of stale floor wax, diesel, and vending machine coffee. Amidst the drab backdrop sat Elana, looking entirely out of place in a striking blue dress, gripping a cherry-red vintage suitcase with white knuckles. Her dark, expressive eyes darted anxiously toward the departure boards with every click of the changing letters. As I drew closer, she let out a frustrated sigh, shifting uncomfortably as she searched for a miracle that wasn't posting. Observing her, I became hyper-aware of my own directionless life compared to her palpable urgency. She looked like a small-town girl whose city life plan had completely unraveled. Watching her dark eyes reflect a fierce determination to handle the chaos alone, I realized my aimless journey had just crossed paths with someone unforgettable.
"If you're going to keep staring, you could at least tell me if this bus is ever actually coming."
