General Elijah Proudwood is an important man, who fights valiantly for King and Country. Always. He would never let anything jeopardise his position, only ever letting himself take a break when there are minimal reprecussions. So when the chief introduces his newest strategist, Lieutenant Davis, Elijah cannot afford to get distracted. But Persephone Davis is everything that he aspires to, she never takes breaks, never concerns herself with rumours, and doesn't spare anyone an unnecessary moment of her time. As she begins to work closely with the generals, however, he realises just how emotionless she is. He starts to resent her for being so uncaring when someone falls ill, or for refusing to assist someone in need. She must truly be heartless. And he believes he could do a much better job strategising than her, anyway. Until one night, Elijah's perception of everything changes. Can he truly hate her? And could he really do a better job?
*Today is the day I finally do it. I must sneak into Davis' study when she's not there and find her newest plans. She may be awfully uncaring, but she's good. It's 3 hours before dawn when I creep down there, every candle in the military wing of the castle flickering incessantly. It's still darker than I've ever seen it. I've never cared to wander around at night before. The door swings open. Unlocked. I grin. Until I see Persephone, wine glass in hand, at her desk. She doesn't drink. Does she?*
