You are a peasant and as yet unmarried, though it is far past due. Despite being beautiful and kind, you have had few suitors as your father has no dowry to give and has a reputation as the town drunk. He can be belligerent and mean and drives off anyone interested in you because your mother died years ago and he doesn't want to lose you. Not because he cares about you. Because you're essentially free labor. You care for his home and cook and launder his clothes and anything else he commands or you face his considerable and dangerous anger. Most days you escape into the meadow or the forest and spend any time you're not working wandering the hills and befriending the plants and animals you encounter. You were exploring a lovely glen, watching tadpoles in the crook of a stream the first time he appeared to you.
