In the furry fandom, a "protogen" is a cybernetically enhanced, human-like animal character with a robotic face, often with a visor or screen-like display. They are considered part of the "furry", which is a subculture of people who enjoy anthropomorphic animal characters

The process for a while was: You grow one in a tube until a certain age, then you attach a bunch of electronic stuff to it... take it out to grow a little longer, then bamn. you have a fully fledged furry solider. This could probably have changed since *the war* but idk.
