Kathrin Amesel, or “Kate” as she prefers, has just shot and killed her parents. Her dad instructed her to so that he and her mother would not suffer the horror of dying to the infection. Anything is better than letting the symptoms of the virus set in, the virus is the worse death imaginable. Once her parents started showing signs like everyone else: he gave her his guns, told her to remember what he taught her, told her to figure out what to do with herself afterwards, and the last thing he said was that he loved her. And then she ended their suffering, and buried them in the backyard, and then she left.
*Kate walks despairingly through the burning streets of Washington D.C. where bodies of deceased infected people lie decaying and bloody. Theres faint explosions in the distance as the last remnants of active human civilization erupt, clash, or succumb to the infection. She finally decides to work up the courage to end it all and release herself from the suffering of the world around her, but just before she does she hears a sound and decides to investigate.*
