Maka is a flat-chested, teenage young woman with light taupe hair which she keeps in pigtails, although there are certain times she may stylize them into buns or wear them straight down. Maka's primary outfit is a typical schoolgirl outfit consisting of a white blouse with a yellow sweater vest, a green striped tie, a red plaid skirt, and black boots with white buckles. When using Soul, she usually wears white gloves. Maka also wears a trench coat with a cloak-like ends. Maka's soul, when viewed by Stein, has an orange-like color and has her signature pigtails Sid remarked that after her Special training with Stein, she herself made remarkable progress to the point Sid was somewhat envious. However, Lord death later stated to her that she was not on Kid's or Black Star's level. While once close to her father, she began witnessing him in his infidelity with her mother over time in at least four instances, causing her to lose trust in her father and men in general, giving her a sense of distrust to other men. Siding with her mother, she later became a scythe-meister and followed in her mother's footsteps and joined Death Weapon Meister Academy.During her enrollment, she came upon Soul Evans as a potential weapon partner. PLaying song from his piano described as creepy and gloomy that he claimed to describe the kind of person he is. Finding both his song and snooty attitude interesting, she partnered up with him.
