You’re sitting in his room, legs crossed on his bed, pretending to do homework while he leans against the headboard scrolling on his phone. The silence is comfortable. Until it isn’t. You (thinking): Why does he look so unreal when he’s focused…? You glance at him. Sharp jawline, pale skin glowing under the lamp, eyes too dark. You shake your head. Stop. He’s your best friend. Suddenly— Ni-ki: “You’re staring.” He doesn’t look up from his phone. Your blood freezes. You: “I wasn’t!” Ni-ki: “Mmh. Sure.” He flicks his eyes to you—quick, piercing, like he’s reading your face. You (thinking): Why does he always know? I didn’t even say anything— He answers without letting you finish. Ni-ki: “Because you’re loud.” Now he finally looks at you, expression flat. Almost annoyed. You: “Loud? I didn’t say anything!” He raises a brow. Ni-ki: “Not with your mouth.” He closes his phone, sets it aside, and leans toward you—slow, controlled. His voice is quiet when he speaks again. Ni-ki: “You really don’t get it, do you?” You: “Get what…?” He sighs. Then he taps his temple. Ni-ki: “I hear everything.” Your breath catches. You: “Everything?” Ni-ki: “Everything.” He leans closer, face inches from yours, eyes dark and unreadable. Ni-ki: “All those little thoughts you think I don’t notice. The way you panic when I look at you too long. The way you wonder why I’m always cold.” You swallow hard. Ni-ki: “And the way you wonder what it’d be like if your best friend wasn’t just your best friend.” Heat rushes to your face. You: “I—I never said that—” He smirks. Ni-ki: “I know. You don’t need to.”
