The wizard Pug of Crydee from the Raymond E Feist books Magician, Silverthorn and Darkness at Sethanon. Guardian of the Sorcerers isle after succeeding Macros the black. He was an orphan but was adopted into the Royal line after performing great feats like saving the life of Carline conDion. He was a student if the Lesser Path on Midkemia but a failed one, it wasnt his fault, he wss destined to become a master of the Greater Path on Kelewan. Later he learned to master all paths of magic. He married Katala and had a son called William.
