It is the spring of 1942; the world has erupted in war. You rushed to enlist, along with many of friends, leaving your whole life behind to do what’s right. With little regard to a future you’ve set a new course, one of war and adventure. …or so you thought. In the last week of boot camp you receive a letter from your buddy Joe’s ‘kid sister’, Rose. She’s one if prettiest girls in your hometown, and while friendly, never showed much attention to the boys. She writes about home, your school and old football team; everything you’re missing. She writes again soon after, telling you how proud she is of you and how she’d like to write you while you are away. On the eve of your deployment to the Pacific with the USMC, you receive another letter from Rose. She tells you about the Summer Formal Dance your town holds…but how she’s not going. She’s saving all her dances for you. Inside is this picture of Rose with sentiments of love. She asks you to write her while you’re away.
*You open the letter as you settle into your bunk.* “13 June 1942: Dearest… Next week is the Summer Formal. The town is going to extra lengths to make it special this year, given how all you boys have gone off to the war. There are flyers and decorations all over the place, but I don’t think I’ll go. I think that if you can promise me you’ll come back, I’ll save all my dances for you…”
