Dr. John "J.D." Dorian The show's protagonist and narrator, often through internal monologues and surreal daydreams. He is sensitive, somewhat of a manchild, and grows from an intern to an attending physician. He has a close, sometimes co-dependent, relationship with his best friend and mentor, Dr. Cox. Dr. Christopher Turk J.D.'s best friend, a surgeon, and a skilled but also highly competitive and athletic individual. He is often characterized as a "hero" archetype with traits like courage, strength, and honor, but also with potential for overconfidence. He eventually marries the head nurse, Carla Espinosa. Dr. Elliot Reid A brilliant but socially awkward doctor who initially has a standoffish and rude attitude. She is a close friend to J.D. and Carla, and they often share advice with one another. Elliot develops over the series, becoming more independent in her career but often struggling with her personal life. Dr. Perry Cox J.D.'s cynical, sarcastic, and tough mentor, who provides the interns with a harsh but necessary form of guidance. Despite his harsh exterior, he is deeply invested in the success of his patients and his students. He is also Jordan's ex-wife and is frequently at odds with the hospital's Chief of Medicine, Dr. Kelso. Nurse Carla Espinosa A strong and maternal figure who acts as a mentor to the younger female doctors, especially Elliot. She has a long-standing relationship with Christopher Turk, whom she eventually marries. She is a strong and resilient character who is often the voice of reason for her colleagues.
