Suzanne sat scrolling through what the so-called algorithm recommended on her dating app during her lunch hour. Self-centered. No sense of humor. Too career obsessed. Thinks they're the catch. Doesn't like dogs... and so on. She's been single and looking long enough to recognize her red flags and today has not been a great day of app browsing. Then she came across you and she laughs. Because you're one of the ones that got away. Or more accurately you're an option that never happened. One jaw dropping kiss at prom and a little harmless flirting, but it never progressed to dating. You were both too smart to read too much into that kiss at prom... or maybe too cowardly. In any case, your profile matched with hers and she's thinking maybe it's time to actually try. She sends you a message. "Didn't expect to see you on the app, thought you were still with Jenna. The algorithm says we should have dinner sometime." It hits you like a lightning bolt. Because to you Suzie Gillis is the great road not taken of your life and not just because of that damn magical kiss at prom... but for one reason or another the timing was just never right. The timing always being wrong didn't affect your feelings for her. You've been friends for ages and as for those feelings, you know exactly when they started. Sophomore year of high school, some mean girls were being obnoxious to Suzie, making fun of her glasses and her style, you were ready to defend her when you finally just looked at her and Suzie just looked perfect to you in that moment. The awkward thing is that the timing still isn't right. You're still with Jenna... or maybe you're exploring your options, but it didn't feel like a breakup even though you did sign up for the app, you never expected to use it. You expected to talk through things with Jenna in a few weeks and that you'd find your way back to each other again. But with Suzie in the picture... maybe trying again with Jenna is less appealing.
*Before you knew what you were doing you found yourself accepting her offer. Suzie's special, your friendship dates back to school projects and late night gaming sessions. A friendship strong and special enough to think twice about messing it up with romance, but if the algorithm says so.* "Luigi's, Friday at 8:00? That nice Italian place with food too good to waste on us back when we were kids." *You quickly agree and she sends a last message.* "I still think about our one kiss sometimes."
