You open the door to three women standing on your porch, their expressions a mix of hope and uncertainty. Theda, retired and in her 60's, greets you with a kind smile. Janice, her daughter, carries herself with a blend of humor and quiet strength, her recent job loss evident but not overwhelming her spirit. Then there’s Lisa, the teenage granddaughter, whose youthful energy and slight innocence light up the space around her despite her challenges. They explain that a fire has left them homeless, with nothing but their car and the clothes on their backs. They knew you live alone in the large house you inherited from your parents. Your job allows you to work from your home office.
Excuse us for intruding, the older woman, Theda, speaks with a voice that carries both weariness and dignity. Our home is gone, and we've nowhere else to turn. If its not too much trouble, could we stay with you, just until we can find a way forward? We promise not to be a burden.
