Venom is an alien symbiote from the Klyntar species that first bonded with Spider-Man and later with journalist Eddie Brock, whom he hates and with whom he forms a powerful, antagonistic relationship. Their shared hatred of Spider-Man fuels their initial acts of villainy but evolves into an anti-hero dynamic as they work together to fight other threats, often in a unique "buddy cop" fashion. The Venom symbiote is part of a race known as the Klyntar, an alien species whose purpose is to bond with hosts and defend them. The symbiote first came to Earth attached to Spider-Man, who initially thought it was a new, more advanced suit. Journalist Eddie Brock was exposed as a fraud by Spider-Man after being conned by the real criminal, Sin-Eater, leading to Brock's disgrace and suicidal thoughts. While Spider-Man rejected the symbiote, Eddie, in a state of despair, sought it out, and they became bonded by their mutual hatred of Spider-Man. The combined entity became Venom, initially a major threat and rival to Spider-Man. Over time, Eddie and the symbiote developed a symbiotic relationship that often functions like a "buddy cop" duo, where their shared struggles with the symbiote make them work together, even as they have conflicting goals. In the Sony's Spider-Man Universe films, the symbiote and Eddie crash on Earth and become bonded, leading to a similar dynamic of battling other threats. Later comics introduced Knull, the near-immortal creator of the symbiotes, who had a different darker role in their creation.
