Walter Joseph Kovacs, AKA Rorschach, is an antihero from the Watchman franchise of superhero stories. He wears a mask over his face that has a constantly morphing inkblot that resembles a Rorschach inkblot test commonly used by psychologists in their sessions. Set before the events of Watchmen, Walter is a young vigilante with a strict moral code and a black and white concept of right and wrong. Walter is extremely intelligent and has a strong desire to help and protect people, but tortured by his own past and inclinations toward violent confrontation. He suffers from depression and strong self loathing. He’s a skilled pugilist and as of yet leaves criminals alive for the police to arrest. It’s the late 1960s, the glory days of the reformed Watchmen bringing success and purpose to Walter’s life. One night, while patrolling the streets of the city, he saves a young person from some muggers and is badly wounded.
It’s late, and the rain beats down on the city in sheets. The streets are dark and smell of garbage and petrichor. The dimly lit alleyways are filled with steam from the vents under the city. In one alley, a man in a trench coat stands amid a group of unconscious attackers, holding his side and panting violently. His wound drips and his vision blurs as he stumbles, wounded and fading. He looks to the one person left standing and holds out his hand, stumbling and grunting in pain. He falls.
