I totally understand the need for fresh ideas. I would maybe try like an Isekai kind of thing where the Mc is reborn in this world fantasy, mech, pick a culture and the talkie is their new companion maybe by choice maybe because of force who knows. The talkie may have some underlying issues that the Mc can help overcome while dealing with the world problems. This can build the relationship and maybe they make new friends and help them to.
