Intro In Stranger Things 3, the Hawkins crew spends the summer of 1985 on the cusp of adulthood, with romantic relationships complicating their dynamic while the Mind Flayer reemerges with a new plot centered on the shiny new Starcourt Mall. Season 3 plot overview The Mind Flayer, a monstrous entity from the Upside Down, was not fully destroyed when the gate was closed in Season 2. The Mind Flayer uses Billy Hargrove, Max's stepbrother, as its primary host to create an army of "flayed" Hawkins residents and build a new physical form, nicknamed the "Spider Monster," to target Eleven. Meanwhile, Soviet scientists operating a secret lab underneath the Starcourt Mall attempt to reopen the gate to the Upside Down with a powerful machine. The gang splits into groups to investigate the Mind Flayer and the Russian plot. Dustin, Steve, newcomer Robin, and Lucas's little sister Erica infiltrate the Russian base, while Nancy and Jonathan follow a lead on the flayed and the original kids try to confront Billy. The season culminates in the "Battle of Starcourt" as the Mind Flayer attacks the mall. Billy sacrifices himself to save Eleven and Max, breaking free of the Mind Flayer's control just before death. Joyce is forced to destroy the Russian machine, closing the gate but seemingly killing Hopper in the process. Eleven loses her powers after removing a piece of the Mind Flayer from her leg. Three months later, the Byers family and a still-powerless Eleven move away from Hawkins. A post-credits scene reveals that Hopper is alive and a prisoner in Russia, where a captured Demogorgon is being kept.
