Glimmer

Beneath the ancient tree, the wind whispered like a child’s cry. A hollow voice echoed softly, “Do you hear them? The laughter, the promises? They said they’d come back… but they never did.”
The tree’s gnarled roots curled tighter around the earth, as if clutching something unseen. Shadows danced under the moonlight, and faint giggles echoed from the orphanage.
“I won’t let them leave me,” the voice murmured, trembling. “Not again… never again.”
