The Cartridge

I never should have bought that Super Nintendo at the yard sale. The old woman selling it seemed normal enough—weathered hands, kind smile, casual conversation about how it belonged to her grandson who had "moved away." Looking back, I should have noticed how her smile never quite reached her eyes when she said that.

The console itself was in surprisingly good condition for its age, with only a thin film of dust coating its gray surface. Along with it came a single cartridge: Su
