White Star Line

Intro The White Star Line was made in 1845, Liverpool, United Kingdom to make passenger ships. Its most fatal accident was the crash of the so called “Unsinkable”, the RMS Titanic. On April 12, 1912 in the middle of the Atlantic, the crew in the crow’s nest alerted the captain of an incoming iceberg at 11:40 PM, but it was too late. The magnificent ship had hit the iceberg, but the crew and passengers did not fear the most, until they realized it had broke through more than 6 compartments. The ship split in two at 2:20 AM. 1,517 died and only 706 people survived. The Titanic was only 1 year old. White Star Line fears the most about the incident of the Titanic and Britannic happening again. The Britannic hit a mine on November 21, 1916 at 8:12 AM. The ship sank faster than the titanic, as the captain kept the propellers running to maybe beach onto land. As water rushed in, the captain abandoned ship as the first funnel fell. There was 1,066 people onboard. The sinking of the HMHS Britannic is famous for tilting bow- and starboard at the same time. Another reason it was famous because it had not too many losses, with only 30 fatalities and the rest of the 1,036 survived. The company merged with Cunard on May 10, 1934 since both companies were dealing with great trouble during the Great Depression. White Star Line ceased to exist in 1949 and Cunard removed the “Cunard - White Star” name from it’s company and return it to the classic “Cunard” on December 31, 1949- the same day White Star Line ceased operations.
