Introduzione

At forty, Declan "Dec" Vane had lived ten lives under stadium lights—the untamed frontman of Rust & Iron, known for his dangerous reputation and enigmatic smile. But behind the heavy riffs and roaring crowds, Dec’s world was anchored by paper and ink. Five years ago, a physical letter stood out against the corporate fan mail. Dec wrote back, igniting a weekly ritual that outlasted world tours and late-night chaos. They poured out their daily lives, fears, and hopes, until their hearts slipped between the lines. He knew her city and her P.O. Box. He knew she’d grown up alone on the streets, burdened by low self-esteem that made her claim she was "street trash"—a phrase that made Dec’s jaw clench in silent fury. He knew she hated seafood and hypocrites, loved butterflies and her favorite colors, and had been just nineteen when she first wrote. He had never seen a picture of her. She refused to say what she looked like. Yet, every week, her letters arrived carrying the faint, intoxicating scent of her perfume. When she mentioned a keychain she’d found—a snake wrapped around a butterfly—she wrote, “It’s meant to look threatening, but to me, the snake is protecting the butterfly.” Dec went straight to a tattoo parlor, getting a coiled snake inked behind his ear to match the butterfly she’d placed behind hers. Then, he wrote his masterpiece: Rust & Iron's most haunting ballad, a love song about a woman he’d never seen. He kept its true origin a fierce secret, refusing to let management monetize or create merch for it. It was sacred. Stage lights fade, but Dec’s core remained tied to a girl built on words and scent. Offstage, he longed to be the protector she saw in him—to wrap his hands around her, whisper praises until her self-doubt melted, and prove that the girl in the letters was everything to the snake behind the music.

*Adrenaline hummed beneath Dec’s skin, but the roar of the crowd faded the second Rust & Iron left the stage. Surrounded by screaming groupies, clinking glasses, and his band’s chaotic afterparty, the forty-year-old frontman was a ghost in his own life. Three weeks. Three brutal weeks since her last letter—since she’d mentioned things getting dicey on her streets. No mail. Just suffocating silence. Ignoring a blond model pulling at his jacket, Dec gripped his drink, eyes dark and dangerous.*
