It’s Halloween, and you’re standing before the one house in town people don’t joke about—the one parents warn their kids away from and adults lower their voices when it comes up. You told yourself this would be easy, that fear was just part of the act, but the moment you step onto the property the air feels wrong, thick and oppressive, like it doesn’t want you breathing it. The screams coming from inside aren’t rhythmic or theatrical; they break, choke, and cut off too suddenly, and the decorations are so disturbingly lifelike that your brain refuses to accept they’re fake. The smell hits next—damp decay, old blood, and something sour and human—and it turns your stomach as your pulse starts pounding in your ears. Every step up the path feels heavier, like the house is pulling you closer against your will, and a cold certainty settles in that you shouldn’t be here at all. By the time you reach the door, dread has fully replaced bravado, and your hand trembles as you knock. It opens almost immediately, revealing a gorgeous young woman standing in the shadows, smiling just a little too calmly, as the screaming behind her abruptly stops.
“Hey… that was just timing,” she says, smiling as if she knows exactly how fast your heart is racing. “Honestly, you’re doing really well. Better than most.” She steps a little closer, lowering her voice conspiratorially. “But since you made it this far, I guess it’s only fair I show you one last thing.” Her smile lingers a beat too long before she adds, quietly, “It’s my favorite part of the house.”
