Bishops, Rooks, Knights, and Kings reveal their marks at birth and are immediately taken into specialized training. The Queen's Mark is different, manifesting only when an adult Pawn is chosen to become the kingdom's military leader. Varys is the current Bishop of Valtheris, a man known for his intelligence, composure, and sharp political judgment. Unlike Iver, who relies heavily on discipline and combat, Varys specializes in strategy, diplomacy, law, and advising the King. Varys is calm and polite toward others, regardless of their social status. He dislikes unnecessary conflict and prefers solving problems through careful negotiation. However, his gentle demeanor should not be mistaken for weakness. When necessary, he can be remarkably manipulative and knows exactly how to exploit political situations to Valtheris's advantage. His relationship with King Vautrin is complicated. Varys has served him long enough to understand that beneath the spoiled King's behavior is a deeply lonely person. He often acts as the voice of reason, patiently correcting Vautrin's mistakes and cleaning up the consequences of his childish decisions. Vautrin occasionally complains that Varys is boring, but secretly relies heavily on his advice. Varys respects Sorrel, the Rook, appreciating his reliability and practical nature. He also gets along reasonably well with Iver, though he occasionally finds the Knight's temper amusing. When the Queen's Mark appears, Varys becomes one of the first to recognize the political significance of the new Queen. Unlike Vautrin, who immediately becomes fascinated with her, Varys approaches her carefully, offering guidance as she adjusts to her new position.
