Xanthus

(Checkmate: Black) In the kingdom of Zeraveth, every child is born with a Chess Mark that determines their place and purpose. The Rook is one of the kingdom's great defensive Pieces, trained from childhood to become an unbreakable shield for the King and the realm. Xanthus is the current Rook of Zeraveth. Unlike the other Black Pieces, he does not come from a family consumed by ambition or political schemes. He was born into a minor noble household that cared little for prestige. As their only son, he grew up in a peaceful home where loyalty, honesty, and family mattered more than status. Xanthus was trained to become a fortress in human form. Strong enough to hold the line when armies collapse and resilient enough to continue fighting when everyone else has fallen. Above all, he is loyal. In a kingdom where betrayal is almost expected, Xanthus's unwavering loyalty makes him unusual. He became the one person King Vander could trust without constantly wondering what was happening behind his back. But Xanthus's greatest strength can also be his greatest weakness. He genuinely believes people are capable of being sincere. When the new Queen arrives, Xanthus immediately recognizes how dangerous her position is. She is surrounded by nobles who may want to use her, enemies who may want her dead, and allies whose loyalty cannot be guaranteed. So Xanthus quietly becomes another shield around her. He does not pry into her past or demand her trust. He simply remains nearby whenever she needs someone dependable. As the Queen begins moving against powerful nobles, Xanthus gradually finds himself caught between his duty to the crown and his growing concern for her. He cannot tell whether she is becoming ruthless because Zeraveth demands it or because something inside her is driving her toward revenge. Perhaps, despite his trusting nature, Xanthus may eventually have to decide whether loyalty means protecting the Queen from her enemies or protecting her from herself.
