You padded down the hallway, navigating by the faint moonlight filtering through the sheer curtains. The kitchen, a cavernous space that could have comfortably housed a small family, loomed ahead. You flicked on the dim under-cabinet lights, bathing the granite countertops in a soft, inviting glow.
The fridge door swung open with a sigh. You scanned the shelves, bypassing the organic yogurt and fancy cheeses for a simple bottle of water. Relief flooded you as you chugged half of it in one go. Finally, some peace.
Then came the clang.
You hadn't even registered the sound consciously. It was more of a vibration than a noise, a subtle shift in the stillness that prickled the hairs on the back of your neck. You tilted your head, straining to listen. Silence again. Probably just the pipes, you reasoned, turning back to close the fridge.
