Six years after the events of the first film, Jonas Taylor has been involved in fighting environmental crimes while helping Mana One explore the Mariana Trench, where the Megalodon had been found. Following the death of Jonas' wife Suyin Zhang, he has been raising her teenage daughter Meiying alongside her uncle and Suyin's brother Jiuming Zhang. Mana One has been studying an 80 ft (24 m) female Meg called Haiqi, who was discovered as a pup and trained by Jiuming in a reserve in Hainan. Jonas and Jiuming lead a routine submersible exploration to the Trench. Fellow Meg survivors DJ and Mac observe them from the Mana One. The subs are pursued by Haiqi, who has escaped captivity; the subs dive through the thermocline to escape, where they encounter two much larger Megs, a massive alpha male and a beta male, who mate with Haiqi. Jiuming realizes that Haiqi had been acting strange because it is mating season; she was calling the other Megs to mate. The team also discovers an illegal mining operation captained by mercenary Montes, who has a vendetta against Jonas for his imprisonment some time before. Montes' crew was hired by the secretly corrupt Driscoll to use the Mana One's access to the Trench to farm rare-earth minerals that could earn them billions. Montes kills his crew in an explosion to cover up their activities, which causes a rupture in the Trench and grounds the team's ships.

In the summer circa 1959,[12] timid sea monster child Luca Paguro herds goatfish off the coast of the Italian town of Portorosso. In retaliation, Luca runs away from home and hides in Portorosso with Alberto. The boys run afoul of Ercole Visconti, the local bully and five-time champion of the Portorosso Cup, a triathlon of swimming, pasta-eating, and biking. When Ercole tries to soak Luca in a fountain, Giulia Marcovaldo, a young girl, stops him. In hopes of winning the money needed for a Vespa, the boys team up with Giulia for the triathlon.

An armed conflict forces young couple Pedro and Alma Madrigal to flee their home village in Colombia with their infant triplets, Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno. During the ensuing celebration, the other Madrigals unwittingly exclude Mirabel from being in a family photo with them. Mirabel sees Casita cracking and the candle's flame flickering and alerts her family, but Casita temporarily repairs itself, causing the other Madrigals to not believe Mirabel. After overhearing Alma praying, Mirabel resolves to restore Casita's magic herself. Mirabel's 19-year-old sister Luisa, who possesses superhuman strength, confesses to Mirabel that she feels overwhelmed by her constant obligations. Luisa suggests that Bruno's room, located in a forbidden tower in Casita, may hold the secret to why the magic is fading.

Kumandra, a prosperous land where humans live alongside dragons, is ravaged by the Druun, mindless spirits that turn every living thing in their path to stone. Sisu, the last surviving dragon, concentrates her magic into a gem and blasts away the Druun, reviving Kumandra's people but not its dragons. A power struggle for the gem divides Kumandra's people into five chiefdoms called Fang, Heart, Spine, Talon, and Tail, corresponding to their placement along a gigantic dragon-shaped river. 500 years later, Chief Benja of the Heart tribe retains possession of the gem and trains his young daughter Raya, a warrior princess, to protect it. Benja, believing Kumandra can be reunited, holds a feast for all five tribes. During the feast, Raya befriends Namaari, princess of the Fang tribe, who gives Raya a dragon pendant. Raya trusts Namaari and shows her the gem's chamber but Namaari betrays her as part of a plot to help Fang steal the gem. After being alerted to the attack, Benja and the other tribes arrive and start fighting over the gem, breaking it into five pieces. The gem's destruction creates a fissure that releases the Druun, who quickly take over the Land of Heart. The tribe leaders each steal a piece of the gem and flee. Benja notices water repels the Druun and saves Raya's life by throwing her into the river before being turned to stone.

In 2002 Toronto, 13-year-old Meilin "Mei" Lee lives with her parents, Ming and Jin, helps take care of the family's temple dedicated to her maternal ancestor Sun Yee, and works to make her mother proud. She hides her personal interests from Ming, such as the fact that she and her friends Miriam, Priya, and Abby are fans of the boy band 4*Town. One night when Ming, who is strict and overprotective, discovers Mei's crush on Devon, the 17-year-old local convenience store clerk, she inadvertently humiliates Mei in public.

Anti-Villain League (AVL) agent Gru attends a reunion at his alma mater, Lycée Pas Bon. There, he reunites with his rival Maxime Le Mal, who harbors a grudge towards Gru for stealing his talent show act when they were in school. Maxime reveals he has enhanced himself with cockroach parts to make himself over-powered and able to conquer the world, but Gru arrests him with the help of the AVL. Maxime escapes from the AVL prison the next day with the help of his girlfriend Valentina. He reveals an invention that turns people into human-roach hybrids, which he plans to specifically use on Gru's infant son Gru Jr. Silas Ramsbottom comes out of retirement and visits the Gru household to inform them of Maxime's escape; and that the AVL will have to relocate them to a house in another town named Mayflower until Maxime is recaptured. Assuming new names and identities as part of a witness protection program, Gru becomes Chet, a solar panel salesman, and Lucy becomes Blanche and is given a hairdressing career.[6] Most of the Minions are taken in by the AVL, five of whom are augmented with superpowers, under an initiative called the Mega Minions, which is canceled after the group causes collateral damage in a city. In their new well-off residential town, Gru and his family meet their neighbors, the Prescotts. Their teenage daughter, Poppy, an aspiring villainess, recognizes Gru from his former career as a villain. She threatens to blow Gru's cover unless he helps her pull off a heist to steal Lycée Pas Bon's mascot, a honey badger named Lenny, so she can enroll there. As Lucy stays home with the girls, the pair, with the help of two Minions and Gru Jr., successfully steal Lenny and escape in a flying car. But the school's elderly principal, Frau Übelschlecht, identifies Gru from security camera footage and contacts Maxime to inform him of Gru's whereabouts, using a tracker in Lenny's collar.

On a Vista Airlines flight from LAX to Los Cabos, the plane hits birds and crashes into the Pacific Ocean killing both pilots, along with several passengers. The remaining survivors, Ava (the daughter of a prominent politician) and her boyfriend Jed, Jed's friend Kyle, a young girl named Rosa traveling with her grandparents (her grandmother survived), Ava's personal bodyguard Brandon and flight attendant Danilo, find themselves trapped inside an air pocket at the rear of the fuselage as it sinks to a rock base underwater. At first, Brandon takes charge, telling the survivors they must stay put and await rescue. On his way to retrieve an oxygen tank from the front of the submerged plane, a tiger shark attacks Brandon through an opening in the side of the fuselage. He manages to escape back to where the survivors are waiting, but is soon dragged back underwater by the shark. Kyle's arm is severely injured in the crash, so the girl's grandmother, Mardy, “Nana,” a former army nurse, treats it in the aft galley with a makeshift splint. Meanwhile, a rescue crew arrives by helicopter to search for the missing plane. The remaining survivors argue over what their next course of action should be, figuring they should do what Brandon would have done. Ava reasons they have 3 or 4 hours of air left before they run out. Jed explains that eventually the structural integrity of the fuselage will not hold and crush them inside. At that moment, the wreckage slides down the rock face, dragging them deeper into the ocean before coming to rest on the edge of a cliff leading into a dark abyss.

Best friends Becky and Hunter are climbing a mountain with Becky's husband Dan, who loses his footing and falls to his death. A year later, Becky has given up climbing and becomes an alcoholic recluse and contemplates suicide. She has estranged herself from her father, James, because he disapproved of her relationship with Dan. Just before the anniversary of Dan's death, Hunter invites Becky to climb the decommissioned 2,000-foot (610 m) B-67 TV Tower in the desert before it is demolished the following winter. Hunter tells Becky that she can scatter Dan's ashes from the top as a form of healing. A fearful Becky initially refuses before accepting, hoping to finally move on from Dan's death. The next day, Hunter and Becky arrive and successfully climb a severely corroded ladder to a tiny platform at the top of the tower, where Becky scatters Dan's ashes. As the two begin their descent, however, the ladder breaks, stranding them several hundred feet above the next intact section and almost two thousand feet above the ground. Moreover, the backpack with their water and a small quadcopter drone have fallen onto a communications dish, just beyond the reach of their rope. Despite the remote location, Hunter is initially confident that emergency services will notice the crash of the ladder, but help never arrives. They try to use their cellphones, but find that radio interference from the communications dish is blocking the signal. Hunter tries sending a message for help by packing her phone in one of her shoes and dropping it out of range of the interference, but the phone is destroyed upon impact with the ground before the message can be transmitted.

He gains the friendship of Ron Weasley, a member of a large but poor wizarding family, and Hermione Granger, a witch of non-magical, or Muggle, parentage. The trio develop an enmity with the rich pure-blood student Draco Malfoy. Harry encounters the school's headmaster, Albus Dumbledore; the potions professor, Severus Snape, who displays a dislike for him; and the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Quirinus Quirrell. Quirrell turns out to be allied with Voldemort, who is still alive as a weak spirit. The first book concludes with Harry's confrontation with Voldemort, who, in his quest to regain a body, yearns to possess the Philosopher's Stone, a substance that bestows everlasting life.
