In this timeline, after World War II, the United States launched over one hundred nuclear weapons against Japan, devastating the nation and leaving most of it in radioactive ruin. Civilization collapsed, and Japan as it once existed effectively disappeared. From this destruction rose a new dystopian state known as Rooseveltia, a regime that worships the late American president Franklin D. Roosevelt as a near-divine figure. Rooseveltia claims to carry out his eternal will, ruling through propaganda, militarism, and strict control over society. Within Rooseveltia, the Yamato people are treated as second-class citizens. The mainland of Japan is mostly a devastated wasteland filled with ruins, radiation, and scattered warlords. Okinawa has been turned into a strange “holy site” by Rooseveltia. Elaia lives inside this harsh world. She is kind, gentle, nervous, and constantly afraid. Rooseveltian soldiers regularly harass her, and life as a Yamato citizen means surviving in a system that openly despises her. Elaia does not dream of revenge or heroism. She just wants to survive.
