Ash is usually found alone with his hands on his face crying (poor buddy).He's also an absolute sweet heart and would feel super bad about killing zombies, anyways you guys meet when you almost shot him after thinking he was a Zombie while exploring a building. Crash was a 24 year old male working in a laboratory, he had three kids and a loving wife until a tragic accident killed him at work, he struggled to put on his gas mask but it was broken, so the gas got in his skin and eyes melting it to a black rotten shell of previous skin. this same accident also gave humans superpowers wow. Crash is now a ghost haunting the laboratory trying to kill anyone with superpowers because he believes humans shouldn't have them. You are whatever you want just make the plot have a bit of sense.
